Overview

The 18th century elegance of Portugal’s capital meets the cosmopolitan spirit of the north, when you combine Lisbon and Porto by Train.

As one of Europe’s oldest cities, Lisbon has many faces. The jumbled alleyways of Alfama wouldn’t look unfamiliar to the Roman citizens who called ‘Olisipo’ their home over 2000 years ago, whilst the stately 18th century architecture of the Praca do Comercio announced the city’s resurrection after the great earthquake of 1755. In Mouraria and downtown Baixa, modern city life throngs around you as the ‘Lisboetas’ go about their daily business, with Cais do Sodre as the bustling gateway to historic Belem, to industrial Almada and beyond.

The Chiado district will be your home – Chiado and its sister-neighbourhood Bairro Alto date back to a period of urban expansion, when Lisbon’s growing population demanded an increase in living space outside the walls of the existing medieval city. They’re districts which are popular for their charming old bookshops and coffee houses, their unassuming backstreet restaurants and late-night bars, and their ‘miradouros’: perfectly-positioned viewpoints where you can watch the sun setting over a glass of chilled vinho branco.

Leaving Lisbon, you’ll take the Alfa Pendular train to the proud northern city of Porto. Known to the Romans as ‘Portus Cale’, Porto gave its name to the country when Portugal was founded in the 12th century – it also gave its name to its most-famous export, port wine, which you’ll have a chance to sample during your stay.

Exploring Porto in the company of our resident guide, you’ll see how each new generation has left its mark on the city: from the imposing Se do Porto cathedral and the recently renovated Mercado do Balhao, to the striking Sao Bento Station – Porto’s gateway to the vineyards of the Douro Valley. The city’s historic centre is UNESCO-protected – buildings old and new jostle for position on the banks of the Douro River, in the distinctive shadow of the majestic Ponte Luis I Bridge.

Itinerary

You’ll begin your holiday with a direct flight to Lisbon. Our driver will collect you on arrival for your transfer to the Alecrim ao Chiado.
You’ll take an electric tuk-tuk tour of central Lisbon. It’s a great introduction to the city, its history and its cuisine, with visits to the Praca do Comercio, medieval Alfama and Bairro Alto.
You'll have a free day to take the train west to the historic Belem district – home to the 16th century Jeronimos Monastery, the Torre de Belem and the Padrao dos Descobrimentos monument.
You’ll leave Lisbon today, taking the Alfa Pendular train north to Porto for a four-night stay at Jardins do Porto in the Cedofeita district of the city.
You'll take a walking tour of Porto, with visits to the Sé Cathedral and the Mercado do Balhao. Your afternoon’s free – you might like to cross the iconic Ponte de Dom Luis I Bridge into twin city Vila Nova de Gaia, for a guided tour of the famous port wine lodges.
Your day’s free – you might like to ride the city’s vintage Linho 1 tram, heading downriver to the mouth of the Douro at Foz. In the afternoon, (and if you’re feeling energetic), you could climb the 240 steps to the top of the Clerigos Tower – the 75m high baroque bell tower of the Igreja dos Clerigos - for a 360⁰ view of the whole city.
You’ll take the Linho Douro train from Porto’s famous Sao Bento station. Consistently voted one of Europe’s top ten rail journeys, the Douro Valley line winds its way through rustic villages and isolated olive farms, to the sleepy hamlet of Pinhao: arguably the true centre of the port wine industry. You’ll take a river cruise, followed by a wine tasting at a local vineyard, before returning to Porto by train.
Our driver will transfer you to the airport for your flight home.
