Overview

Ditch the car and explore Porto, Barcelos and Viana do Castelo by Train.

From tranquil countryside to bustling urban beauty, there’s no better way to appreciate Portugal’s charming Minho region than by train. Flying into the northern capital Porto, you’ll begin your holiday with a three-night stay in the city’s bustling historic quarter – crossing the revered Ponta Luis I into Vila Nova da Gaia: Porto’s twin city and the spiritual home of port wine.

The Sao Bento train station, another of Porto’s treasured landmarks, is your departure point – you’ll leave the city, heading north on the Minho line to the pretty riverfront town of Barcelos. You’ll be more familiar with this peaceful rural idyll than you perhaps realise – the town’s emblem, the O Galo de Barcelos, is one of the iconic symbols of Portugal.

Back on the train, you’ll head to the far northwestern corner of the country for three-nights in the port town of Viana do Castelo. It’s a pleasure getting lost amongst central Viana’s 18th century architecture – you’ll be staying high on the Monte de Santa Luzia: the high promontory which overlooks Viana, home to the impressive Santuario do Sagrado Coracao de Jesus.

A final train journey brings you south once again – following the Atlantic Coast down into Porto, for a final evening on the banks of the grand Douro River.

Itinerary

You’ll begin your holiday with a direct flight to Porto. Our driver will collect you on arrival for the transfer to Casa Camelia on the north bank of the River Douro.
You’ll take a half-day walking tour of Porto, with visits to the Sé Cathedral, the Mercado do Balhao, and the grand Praca da Liberdade. You’ll be free in the afternoon to cross the iconic Ponte de Dom Luis I Bridge into Vila Nova da Gaia, for a visit to the city’s famous port wine houses.
You might like to ride the city’s vintage Linho 1 tram, heading downriver to the mouth of the Douro at Foz. In the afternoon, you could climb the Clerigos Tower for a 360⁰ view of the whole city, ending the day with a visit to the Lello bookshop.
You’ll take the train north: from Porto’s impressive Sao Bento train station to the sleepy riverside town of Barcelo, for a three-night stay at the Casa Ana Boutique Guest House.
Your day’s free to explore Barcelos on foot. Historically, the town was renowned for its pottery and ceramic art – thanks to the Nando’s restaurant chain, modern-day Barcelos is inextricably linked to one of Portugal’s national symbols, the O Galo de Barcelos: the Rooster of Barcelos, who’s origins are firmly rooted in local folklore and fable.
You’ll be free to take the train to the Roman city of Braga: one of Portugal’s oldest cities, where you’ll explore it’s preserved medieval architecture and fascinating Roman archaeology.
You’ll take the train west from Barcelos - out to the coast for a three-night stay the Pousada da Viana do Castelo, high on the Monte de Santa Lucia.
Your day’s free so you can explore the monte, the stunning Santuario do Sagrado Coracao de Jesus, and the Citania Santa Luzia Iron Age settlement.
You’ll take the Elevador de Santa Luzia down into the centre of Viana do Castelo, to visit the Praca da Republica, the Museu do Traje, the Museu de Artes Decorativas, and the preserved Gil Eannes White Fleet hospital ship.
You’ll catch the lunchtime train south, crossing the Douro to spend your final evening at The Rebello in Vila Nova da Gaia. From its position on the south bank of the river, your hotel’s rooftop bar and restaurant has one of the best views of Porto and the Ponta Luis I bridge.
You'll be transferred to the airport for your flight home.
