Overview
The Fortaleza do Guincho is a luxurious, five-star hotel overlooking the mouth the grand River Tagus.
The Romans, the Moors and the Portuguese all occupied the site of modern-day Lisbon, and each understood the need to protect their gateway to the Atlantic Ocean. The Fortaleza do Guincho was constructed in the 17th century as part of a network of fortifications which lined the shores or the Tagus River – from Belem in the east to Cascais in the west.
The 21st century Fortaleza has been repurposed as a five-star hotel overlooking the beautiful, sweeping sands of Praia do Guincho beach. You’ll see two of the original cannons positioned outside the front entrance – many of the most-interesting architectural features have been sympathetically renovated. Rest-assured, the rustic accommodations of a military barracks have long since been replaced by comfortable, five-star splendour.
In addition to its historic charms, the Fortaleza do Guincho is also celebrated for its Michelin-starred restaurant – showcasing the wealth of seasonal produce which the Lisbon region is rightly famous for.
